Pre & Post Care Guide
Your results are built in three places: our treatment room, your bathroom mirror, and the shade you keep from the Florida sun. This guide tells you exactly what to do before and after each SkinHealth Studios treatment, so you heal faster and see more from every session.
Your treating clinician will confirm the instructions that fit your skin, health history and treatment plan. Never stop a prescribed medication without talking to your prescriber first.
Before Every Appointment
These apply to every treatment we offer. Treatment-specific steps follow below.
• Update your health history. Tell us about new medications, supplements, hormone therapy changes, allergies, pregnancy or breastfeeding, and any recent procedures.
• Flag your history. Let us know about cold sores, keloids or unusual scarring, slow healing, autoimmune conditions, diabetes, or reactions to past treatments.
• Isotretinoin (Accutane). Tell us if you have taken it in the past 6 months. Your medical provider will decide whether your treatment needs to wait.
• Recent injectables. Tell us about Botox, Daxxify, filler or biostimulators in the last 2 weeks, or planned in the next 2 weeks, so we can time your treatment safely.
• Sun and tanning. Avoid sunburn, tanning beds and self-tanner on the treatment area for 2 weeks before resurfacing treatments.
• Hair removal. Skip waxing, threading or depilatory creams on the treatment area for 5–7 days beforehand.
• Active products. Ask us when to pause retinoids, exfoliating acids (glycolic, lactic, salicylic), benzoyl peroxide and scrubs. Each treatment below lists a typical window.
• Arrive clean. Come with a makeup-free face when possible. If you wear makeup, we will cleanse it off.
• Feeling unwell? If you have a fever, rash, infection, open wound, active cold sore or sunburn in the treatment area, call us before your visit. We will help you reschedule.
Facials, DiamondGlow, Jet Peel and Dermaplaning
These treatments have little to no downtime. Most clients leave glowing and go straight back to their day.
Before
• Pause retinoids, exfoliating acids and scrubs for 3–5 days (dermaplaning and DiamondGlow).
• No waxing, threading or laser hair removal on the face for 5–7 days.
• Avoid sunburn. Skin that is already irritated cannot be safely exfoliated.
• For dermaplaning, tell us about active acne breakouts. We will work around them or adjust the plan.
After
• First 6–12 hours: Skip makeup so the infused serums keep working. A mineral sunscreen is fine.
• First 24 hours: No heavy sweating, hot yoga, saunas, steam rooms or swimming.
• First 48–72 hours: No retinoids, acids, scrubs or at-home exfoliating devices.
• Cleanse gently, moisturize and apply broad-spectrum SPF 30+ every morning.
• Mild pinkness for a few hours is normal. Dermaplaning may leave skin smoother and slightly more sensitive for a day.
• Booking another treatment? Wait at least 1 week before waxing, peels or other exfoliating services, unless we have planned them together.
Expect: Immediate radiance. Hydration and clarity build with a series, typically every 4 weeks.
Chemical Peels and The Perfect Derma Peel
Peels resurface skin in controlled layers. Downtime depends on peel depth. Light peels flake lightly, while The Perfect Derma Peel produces visible peeling for about a week.
Before
• Pause retinoids, exfoliating acids, benzoyl peroxide and scrubs for 5–7 days.
• No waxing, threading, laser or other resurfacing on the area for 7–14 days.
• No sunburn, tanning or self-tanner for 2 weeks.
• If you get cold sores, tell us at booking. Your medical provider may prescribe an antiviral to start before your peel.
• Some peels need 2–4 weeks of skin prep with brightening or retinoid products, especially for melasma or deeper skin tones. We will tell you if yours does.
• Plan around events. Avoid big occasions, photos or travel during days 2–7.
After: What to Expect
• Day 0–1: Tightness, mild redness, possibly a slight tint from the solution.
• Day 2–3: Skin feels tight and shiny. Peeling usually begins around the mouth and nose.
• Day 3–7: Active peeling or flaking. This is the peel working.
• Day 7–10: Fresh, brighter skin. Continue strict sun protection.
After: What to Do
• The Perfect Derma Peel: Follow your take-home kit exactly. Leave the solution on for at least 6 hours, without washing, touching or applying makeup. On the morning of day 2, cleanse and apply your post-peel towelettes as your kit directs. Peeling usually starts around day 3. Avoid retinoids and glycolic products for 10 days after.
• Cleanse with lukewarm water and a gentle cleanser. Pat dry; never rub.
• Apply the post-peel moisturizer we recommend as often as your skin feels tight.
• Wear mineral SPF 30+ daily and reapply every 2 hours outdoors. A hat is your best friend this week.
• Never pick, pull or peel flaking skin. Trim loose edges with clean scissors if needed. Picking causes scarring and dark spots.
• No sweating, saunas, hot showers or swimming for 48 hours.
• No retinoids, acids or exfoliants until peeling has fully stopped, usually 7–10 days.
• Makeup can return once peeling stops, unless your clinician says sooner.
• Do not substitute instructions from a different peel. Each formula has its own protocol.
Expect: Brighter tone and smoother texture within 1–2 weeks. Pigment and melasma typically need a series spaced 4–6 weeks apart.
Microneedling (SkinPen) with Regenerative Boosters
Microneedling creates thousands of micro-channels that trigger your skin's own collagen repair. When we pair it with PDRN, exosomes, Toskani or Promoitalia boosters, those channels carry regenerative ingredients deeper. Expect 1–3 days of social downtime.
Before
• Pause retinoids, exfoliating acids and benzoyl peroxide for 5–7 days.
• Tell us about any isotretinoin (Accutane) use in the past 6 months.
• No sunburn, tanning or self-tanner for 2 weeks.
• No waxing or laser on the face for 7 days.
• Tell us if you take aspirin, ibuprofen, fish oil, vitamin E, ginkgo or blood thinners, since these can increase bruising. Do not stop anything prescribed without your doctor's approval.
• Skip alcohol for 24 hours before treatment to reduce bruising and swelling.
• If you have a history of cold sores, your medical provider may prescribe an antiviral to start beforehand.
• Arrive 15 minutes early if numbing cream is part of your plan. Apply it at home only if we have told you to.
After: What to Expect
• Day 0–1: Redness like a moderate sunburn, with warmth, tightness and mild swelling.
• Day 2–3: Redness fades to pink. Skin may feel dry or rough.
• Day 3–5: Light flaking is possible. Skin looks smoother and brighter.
• Weeks 4–6: New collagen continues to build, and results improve with each session.
After: What to Do
• Booster serums (PDRN, exosomes, Toskani, Promoitalia): Leave the post-treatment layer on. Do not wash your face until the time we give you, usually that evening or the next morning.
• First 24 hours: No makeup, sweating, gym or alcohol. Use only the products we apply or send home with you.
• Sleep on a fresh, clean pillowcase the first night and keep pets off your face.
• Days 1–3: Use only a gentle cleanser, lukewarm water, an approved hydrating serum and moisturizer.
• 48–72 hours: No pools, hot tubs, saunas, steam rooms or ocean swimming. Open channels are vulnerable to bacteria.
• Wear mineral SPF 30+ from day 2 onward, and avoid direct sun for at least 1 week.
• 5–7 days: No retinoids, acids, vitamin C serums or exfoliants unless we approve them.
• Do not use an unrelated serum during or right after microneedling. Some ingredients are irritating or unsafe in open micro-channels.
• No other facial treatments for 2 weeks unless they are part of your plan.
Expect: Smoother texture and glow within a week. Firmness, fine lines and pores improve over a series of 3–6 sessions spaced 4–6 weeks apart.
LaseMD Ultra
LaseMD Ultra is a gentle fractional laser that targets pigment, sun damage, texture and dullness. Most clients have 2–5 days of social downtime, with a sandpaper-like texture as treated skin sheds.
Before
• Pause retinoids, exfoliating acids, benzoyl peroxide and scrubs for 5–7 days.
• No sunburn, tanning beds, spray tans or self-tanner for 2–4 weeks. Tanned skin raises the risk of pigment problems.
• Tell us about any isotretinoin (Accutane) use in the past 6 months.
• Tell us about photosensitizing medications, such as certain antibiotics, acne medications or diuretics.
• If you have a history of cold sores, your medical provider may prescribe an antiviral to start 1–2 days before.
• Arrive with clean skin. We apply numbing cream in the studio for about 30–45 minutes.
• Melasma clients may need 2–4 weeks of skin prep first. We will build this into your plan.
After: What to Expect
• Day 0–1: Warmth, redness and mild swelling, often most visible around the eyes the next morning.
• Day 2–4: Skin feels like fine sandpaper. Dark spots may look darker and "bronzed" before they shed.
• Day 4–7: Tiny brown flakes lift away, and brighter, more even skin appears.
• Weeks 2–4: Tone and texture keep refining.
After: What to Do
• Apply the post-treatment serum we send home with you exactly as directed. Do not swap in other products.
• Use cool compresses (never ice directly on skin) for comfort in the first 24 hours.
• Sleep with your head slightly elevated the first night to reduce swelling.
• First 24 hours: No makeup and no hot showers on the face. Skip strenuous exercise, alcohol and saunas until initial healing, usually several days, since they increase redness.
• Cleanse gently with lukewarm water starting the next morning, unless we tell you otherwise.
• Moisturize generously. Skin will feel dry while it sheds.
• Wear mineral SPF 30+ every day from day 2 and reapply every 2 hours outdoors. Avoid direct sun for 2 weeks.
• Do not scrub, pick or exfoliate the sandpaper texture. Let it shed on its own.
• No pools, hot tubs, saunas or ocean swimming for 3–5 days.
• No retinoids, acids or vitamin C until shedding stops, usually 5–7 days.
• Makeup can usually return after 24–48 hours if your skin is not irritated.
Expect: Brighter, clearer skin in 7–10 days. Pigment and melasma typically need a series of 3–6 treatments spaced about 4 weeks apart.
Plasma Pen (Plasma MD)
Plasma Pen uses a precise plasma arc to tighten and lift skin, often around the eyes, mouth and neck. It creates tiny carbon dots that act as natural bandages. This treatment has the most downtime we offer, so plan for 7–10 days.
Before
• A consultation is required. Plasma Pen is not suitable for every skin tone or skin type, and we screen for pigment risk.
• Pause retinoids and exfoliating acids for 7–14 days.
• No sunburn, tanning or self-tanner for 4 weeks.
• Tell us about any isotretinoin (Accutane) use in the past 6 months.
• No Botox, Daxxify or filler in the treatment area for 2 weeks before.
• If you have a history of cold sores, your medical provider may prescribe an antiviral, especially for treatment around the mouth.
• Clear your calendar. Avoid events, photos, travel and on-camera work meetings for 7–10 days.
• For eyelid treatments, arrange a ride home and have sunglasses ready. Swelling can make driving difficult.
• For any eye-area treatment, remove eyelash extensions beforehand, arrive without contact lenses, and wear glasses for at least 3 days after.
After: What to Expect
• Day 0–3: Swelling (often most noticeable on days 2–3, especially the eyelids), warmth and tightness. Carbon dots form.
• Day 3–7: Dots darken into tiny crusts, and swelling settles.
• Day 5–10: Crusts fall off on their own, revealing pink skin underneath.
• Weeks 2–6: Pinkness fades gradually, and tightening continues.
• Weeks 8–12: Final results appear as collagen remodels.
After: What to Do
• Never pick, scratch or remove the carbon dots. Removing them early can cause scarring or pigment changes.
• Keep the area clean and dry for the first 24 hours, or as your clinician directs.
• Use only the aftercare product we provide. No other creams, oils or serums on the dots.
• Cool compresses wrapped in a clean cloth can ease swelling. Never put ice directly on the skin.
• Sleep on your back with your head elevated for the first 3 nights.
• No makeup on treated skin until all crusts have fallen off.
• No sweating, exercise, saunas, hot tubs or swimming until the crusts are gone.
• Pat skin gently when cleansing, and avoid hot water and steam.
• Sun protection is essential. Stay in the shade during healing, then wear mineral SPF 30+ daily for at least 8–12 weeks. New skin pigments easily.
• No retinoids, acids or other treatments on the area for 4 weeks, or until we clear you.
Expect: Visible tightening once healed, improving over 8–12 weeks. We may recommend a touch-up session after 12 weeks.
Cold Plasma, DEP, LED and Lymphatic Drainage
These treatments have no downtime and are often added to other services. If one is combined with a peel, laser or microneedling, follow the longer recovery instructions.
Cold Plasma
• Before: Pause retinoids and acids for 2–3 days. Tell us about pacemakers or implanted electrical devices.
• After: Mild pinkness may last a few hours. Skip makeup for 6 hours, avoid heavy sweating for 24 hours, and wear SPF 30+.
DEP (Dermoelectroporation)
DEP uses gentle electrical pulses to help ingredients penetrate without needles.
• Before: Tell us if you have a pacemaker, implanted electrical device, metal implants in the face or epilepsy, or if you are pregnant. DEP may not be suitable.
• After: Leave infused serums on for at least 6 hours. Skip makeup and heavy sweating for the rest of the day.
LED Light Therapy (included with your treatment)
• Before: Tell us about photosensitizing medications, light-triggered migraines or seizures, or any eye conditions. We provide protective eyewear.
• After: No special care is needed. LED is calming and supports healing after other treatments.
Lymphatic Drainage Facial
• Before: Tell us about recent facial surgery, infection, active cancer treatment, heart or kidney conditions, or blood clots.
• After: Drink plenty of water. Mild de-puffing is normal and is most noticeable within 24 hours.
Post-Surgical Care
Any treatment after surgery must be coordinated with your surgeon. We need written clearance before treating a post-surgical area.
Healing in Perimenopause and Menopause
As estrogen declines, skin becomes thinner, drier and slower to repair. That does not mean you heal poorly. It means your recovery plan should be built for your hormones, and that is the heart of how we treat at SkinHealth Studios.
• Expect a slightly longer recovery. Redness and dryness may last 1–2 days longer than the timelines above.
• Barrier first. Use a rich, fragrance-free moisturizer with ceramides and cholesterol while you heal.
• Tell us about hormone changes. Starting, stopping or adjusting HRT, birth control or thyroid medication can change how your skin responds.
• Hot flashes and heat. Flushing and night sweats can irritate freshly treated skin. Keep your bedroom cool and use a breathable, clean pillowcase.
• Protein, hydration and sleep. Collagen repair depends on them. Aim to be well hydrated and rested in the week after resurfacing.
• Pigment watch. Hormonal shifts can raise melasma risk. Daily SPF is non-negotiable for months after laser, peels and Plasma Pen.
Want a plan built around your hormones? Ask about our Menopause Regeneration Program at your next visit.
